Wachichoo Interview | Put Me in the Picture | Nov. 2011

-Introduce Yourself:

We are a 5- piece soul-rock band from New York City! 2 singers, (Ill-on C, Ashanti J’Aria); keyboards (Chris Strange); drums (Dominic Rubano); and bass (Jamie Pitrelli)

-How did you get your start?

We started at a jam session at the Sweatshop Rehearsal Studios (old spot on Metropolitan Ave in Brooklyn, NY).  A bunch of us were waiting around for another rehearsal, and found Dom who happened to work there at the time.  From that initial jamming, we wrote our first song “Wachichoo”.

-Who are some of your influences?

It’s kind of all over the map. A bit of old hip hop (Tribe, Black Sheep), mixed with ‘70s soul / funk similar to Stevie Wonder.

Chris: But growing up, I was into a lot of punk and high energy bands like Avail and Nirvana.   I think we blend the sonics and energy of all these different styles into something unique, danceable, and powerful all at the same time.

-How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard your music before?

1 part soul, add a dash of BIG beats, mix in some electronics and serve with

HOT SAUCE.

-Do you have any music available for purchase, & if so where can people go to buy it?

Yes!  You can grab our latest EP, “PRODUCT” on iTunes

-Do you have any upcoming shows and if so where can the dates be found?

All of our upcoming dates are available on our Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/wachichoo

Wed 11/16 at the NYC Alternarock Festival at Local 269 – 8pm

Tues 12/13 at The Bowery Electric – 11pm

“It’s a tough call , but probably “Product”.  It’s a fun one to get real spazzy with and jump around.

-What is the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you while performing?

-Who is someone you would like to work with or play a show with in the future?

Probably The Roots or Odd Future.
