Tommy McCarthy (formerly of No Authority) Interview | Put Me in the Picture | Oct. 2006

About Tommy:

Tommy knew at a young age that he loved to be in front of an audience even if it was just in his church in South Carolina. He competed in and won every local and state talent competition via his first love, dance. Tommy graduated as Valedictorian of his high school class and then decided to put college aside for a while and move to LA to live with his older brother, Jimmy. After interning at a recording studio and dancing in music videos and on Soul Train, Tommy decided to try his hand at other creative things. While on the set of a movie, he met the person who eventually introduced him to the band No Authority. During his 3½ years with NA, Tommy was able to incorporate his loves for writing, producing, singing and dancing. He performed for tens of thousands of people almost each and every show on Nickelodeons All That Music and More Festival Tour, Britney Spears Oops! I Did It Again Tour, and 98 Degrees Heat It Up Tour. NA also played numerous radio shows and even performed for over 80,000 Nascar fans at Richmond International Speedway. After the break-up of NA, Tommy continued to write and record original material, supporting this passion by working construction, tele-marketing, and eventually bartending. He has finally begun recording a brand new album with a brand new sound and is so serious about it this time that he is relocating back east until the completion of the album! Aside from music, Tommy is also pursuing acting, is currently in a national Slim-Jim commercial and has ALSO been filming a television show for the past 16 months. Stay tuned because Tommy will be making plenty of noise for years to come!

Introduce yourself.

I’m Bill S. Preston Esq.

What went through your mind when NA (No Authority) broke up?

Well, that sure was a lot of fun!!!

What kind of projects did you do after NA broke up?

Couple of solo projects, couple of independent films, commercials, and umm… a couple of crossword puzzles….

Is there anything specific you’re working on right now?

Well, yeah, actually!!! I have been working on a documentary-type television show for the past three years or so, following the lives of independent artists, (the real shit, not the “reality t.v. version”..)… I also just opened up my own online music store and plan on putting a single out very soon!!! You can check it out at www.burnlounge.com/tommymac!!! You can even go into business with me by becoming a retailer through my store and having your OWN store!!! Just make sure you contact me first so I can make sure you’ve got what it takes!!! ;o) Contact me through my MySpace at www.myspace.com/tommymccarthy!!!

Who are your musical inspirations?

Stevie Wonder, Brian McKnight, Boyz II Men, Bobby Brown, John Cougar Mellencamp, Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, New Kids on the Block and Pee-Wee Herman.. lol…

What are you hoping to accomplish in the music industry?

Well, after I put out an album or two of great pop songs that are a lot of fun, I am going to work on an album of organic material, a little southern rock/blues project… However, if the first album doesn’t sell, I’m just gonna’ quit and become a fireman, so please tell all of your friends to pick up the album when it comes out in my store!!! Again, that’s www.burnlounge.com/tommymac!!! ;o)

What was the best thing about moving to LA?

Besides the weather???

Tell us about this TV show you’ve been filming.

You’ll see!!! ;o)

What has been the best opportunity you’ve had while in the music industry?

Seeing the country, Lord KNOWS I didn’t make in MONEY!!! In FACT, I owe the I.R.S. about $10,000!!! Wait, didn’t Willie Nelson have a benefit to help him pay off his tax debt??? Hmm… Okay, let’s start putting together a fund here, we’ll call it, “Band-Aid 2006”!!! ;o)

You’ve gotten the chance to tour with some great artists, who would you like to tour with now?

Depends on what I would be performing…. As far as someone that would be fun to HANG OUT with on the road, ummmmmm…… The Jack-Ass guys!!! I may end up with a G.I. Joe coming out of my nose though, so… maybe not…

Have you been performing locally or just hanging low?

LOL… That question just sounds funny…. But to answer it, I have been trying to get my life back together in L.A…. I left for 8 months to go back east and record, and basically kinda’ take a break from the westcoast… I’m back now, workin’ on a pilot for a comedy series, just opened my online store, and I’m still doin’ some bartending to make ends meet until my I put some music up and my store takes off… Also, lookin’ for a place to live (currently staying in Redondo with a couple of girls, but it’s getting a little bit much with the commute and all!!)… I’m basically a gypsy, and it feels totally AWESOME, but I’m ready to have a freakin’ BEDROOM again!!! LOL!!

fun stuff

Favorite candy?
Don’t eat it much anymore, got my fill of it in school, before I got my adult teeth…. lol…

Favorite holiday?

Christmas, family is AWESOME!!!

Favorite thing to do on the weekends if you’re not working?

Hmm… lately I don’t differentiate between weekdays and weekends…

Favorite reality TV show?

Kinda’ hate the fact that reality television has taken so much away from the actors and writers (although most “reality” shows are WRITTEN anyway)…. Plus, I find it a little disturbing when someone gets DRUNK for a few months in a house with a bunch of other people, makes an ass out of themselves in front of millions of viewers, and then expects to be treated like a celebrity…. Umm… do gameshows count???

Would you rather be in a group or is solo better?

Well, the group thing was a lot of fun because you knew you weren’t in the thing alone, ya’ know?? But, honestly, having too many opinions (and occasionally egos) gets a little much at times!!!

Any other info we should know about?

Yeah, you should definitely check out the company that I spoke of earlier!!! You may not know about it now, but when 2.0 comes out in January, you WILL!!! Right now, there are 50,000 stores opened, come January, it is going to be in the neighborhood of 5 MILLION!!! And guess what, WE can all have a PIECE of that!!! Tower Records, Wherehouse??? All going bye-bye!!! Time for US to benefit from what we have been doing for years, LOVING MUSIC!!! 🙂 It’s simple, go to my store at www.burnlounge.com/tommymac and watch the commercial at the bottom… If it interests you, hit me up on my MySpace and I’ll tell ya’ more about it!!! There is a LOT of money to be made, the question IS, do YOU wanna’ make some money WITH me???? ;o)

Message for your fans?

Even when things look the darkest, don’t give up, you MAY not have a second chance!!!

Another thing that I came up with recently was this….
“Desperate people see things NOT for what they are worth, but for what they are worth RIGHT NOW…”

It’s been a long road, and I’ve gone too far to turn back or take another direction… God didn’t order my steps here not to be heard… Keep listenin’…
