Connor Paolo Interview | Put Me in the Picture | May 2009

Introduce yourself

-Hey, i’m Connor Paolo and i’m mostly known for playing Eric van der Woodson on Gossip Girl.

When did you get your start in acting?

– I began acting at the age of nine, first appearing on the soap opera All My Children.

Who are your inspirations?

-Ed Westwick is someone I really look up to as an actor and as an older guy.

Tell us about your character Eric on Gossip Girl?

-Well, Eric is the voice of wisdom on the show. He is Serena’s little brother and best friend to Jenny. Eric always trys to see the best in people.

What is it like working with Taylor Momsen, Chace Crawford, Blake Lively, Penn Badgley, Leighton Meester and Ed Westwick?

– To be honest, it’s a very different experience working with each member of the cast. I spend the majority of my time with Taylor, with Ed, with Kelly Rutherford, who plays Lily, and with Blake just because those are kind of the members of my family, and Taylor’s kind of an ancillary member of the family. But I have a different relationship with each of the actors off screen. Taylor and I are best friends in real life too, we even went to high school together.

Will Gossip Girl be going for another season?

-Maybe, if the fans want to see another season, there might be one.

Tell us about your upcoming projects, Camp Hope and Favorite Son.

– Camp Hope is feature length horror film that takes place at a christian summer camp. At the end of every summer, the children of a Christian community from a suburb of New Jersey attend Camp Hope. They travel deep into the woods far from any distractions the world provides. The children are taught the ways of the Lord, the perils of the flesh, and the horror of the Devil. A charismatic priest leads them in their training. But, he unknowingly has brought something with him, something evil. What was supposed to be a safe place, a spiritual retreat has now turned into nightmare that not even faith can end.

Favorite Son is a story of family, of dreams deferred, and of a final chance at redemption. David Paxton, nearing the end of his minor league baseball career, returns to his hometown as much less the hero he once assumed he would become.

Any other upcoming projects?

-I just wrapped a movie called The Winning Season, and I was working on a new musical called Man in the Ceiling for a couple weeks.

Are you still currently going to school inbetween all your work?

-Yes, i go New York University.

You had a role in the World Trade Center movie-tell us about your experience in the movie portraying such a tragic event.

– Honestly i was a little scared, i was nervous. I mean it was such a tragic event and i still remember where i was when it happend. But after all it’s was great to the movie, to show the people outside of new york who it happend.

You performed on Broadway in The Full Monty-Do you miss doing broadway or do you prefer TV and Movies?

– My first love was always film, only because, as an actor, I love being able to really kind of disappear for one, two, three months, however long your shoot is, and inhabit that character and be that person and really not have to deal with the outside world. It’s a great feeling, and it’s really, I think, the highest high that you can get as an actor. When you’re working with television or with theater, which a lot of people enjoy this aspect of it as well, but you spend much more time as yourself because you’re going home at the end of every day. You’re not necessarily on location. You’re not far away. You go to the theater, and you’re on stage from 7 to 9, or 7 to 10, and then you go home. And then when you wake up in the morning, you’re doing that. When you’re working on a film, you’re kind of just involved in that world. The cast of that film are your friends because you’re working too much to really see other people. I like that energy, and I like kind of just being able to remove myself from my own life for a period of time and really kind of inhabit somebody else’s.
